Female Athlete of the Month: McKenzie McKelvey

Competitive Cheer - McKenzie McKelvey is an athlete that hasn’t always had the easy road to success. She has had many challenges thrown her way. She has accepted them and faced each one with maturity. She uses the challenges she has faced as an opportunity to learn and grow. She began cheering in 6th grade and has improved tremendously each year with the goal to continue cheering in college. Her passion for the sport is contagious! Each year she shows discipline at practices and at home by putting in the extra work, whether it be attending open gyms, stretching for jumps, or going to the gym to work out. She is always doing more to improve. McKenzie is also a leader on our team. She begins practices, motivates teammates, and takes the extra step to include all of her teammates in decisions. She is dedicated to her sport and schoolwork with a 3.955 GPA. McKenzie does extra to by applying for athletic and academic scholarships through ICCA, shows leadership, and uses life’s challenges as opportunities to grow. McKenzie has been chosen as our football cheer MVP in 2021, All-Conference in 2019 and 2020, and All-American at camp in 2019. Unfortunately, last year there wasn’t an opportunity to be selected as an All-Conference member, but I truly believe she would have been chosen again! McKenzie demonstrates all of what we as an athletics program are trying to promote: competitiveness, dedication, discipline, and passion. I cannot wait to watch McKenzie continue to learn and mature by following her dreams in college, and I couldn’t be more proud of her!

Male Athlete of the Month: Jordan Sommers

This month, Jordan has won two tournaments, placing first at Civic Memorial and Marion at 220 pounds. He also currently holds the title of the #1 ranked wrestler at 220 pounds in the state of Illinois. To win the Civic Memorial tournament, he defeated three state-ranked wrestlers on the day, including the #2 state-ranked wrestler. Off the mat, Jordan keeps all A's and B's as a student and is a terrific leader for our wrestling team as a captain. He has organized team workouts on days we do not have practice, and he is a kind friend to his peers at WHS. He is an active member of FCA as well. Jordan has committed to McKendree College to continue his wrestling and academic career.
